Water: Friend or Foe?

Water is our friend. It’s an essential and natural part of the life that we live with today, yet when does water go from being our friend to being our enemy? When it comes to your home, water should stay on the outside rather than the inside. When water gets on the inside of your home it ends up staying there, creating puddles, growing mold and adding additional stress to you and your family.

Water finds its way into your home through a variety of different ways. A common way is the oversaturation of water in the soils around your home. This problem is caused from recent heavy rainstorms, with no where to go, the water finds residence in the cracks in your foundation and makes its way into your home. Another way is through burst pipes or natural disasters that force great quantities of water in your home, often times not allowing you to take preventative measures.

By the time you find out that water is in your home, it is already too late. But symptoms can be noticed if checked out immediately after a threat occurs (i.e. heavy rainstorm). If you have a finished basement, an obvious sign of water getting in your home is a part or section of your finished basement that is wet where the flooring meets the foundation. For unfinished basements the symptoms could be slightly harder to notice. Aside from the intrusion of water, other symptoms include damp or wet walls and/or a musty smell due to the growth of mold or mildew.
